On Friday, Franco Abdelkader Omeich, President of the Italian-Arab Friendship Association, called for the imposition of peace in the Gaza Strip, which has been embroiled in war since October.
Amid the deteriorating situation in Gaza, the president of the Italian-Arab Friendship Association issued a clear message to the international community, urging an end to the U.S. veto, which has been used to block United Nations Security Council resolutions calling for a halt to massacres against Palestinians and the imposition of peace in the region under Chapter VII of the UN Charter.
He stated, "This call comes at a time when Gaza is suffering unprecedented levels of violence and humanitarian distress, necessitating urgent action by the international community." He explained, "Chapter VII of the UN Charter grants the Security Council the power to take coercive measures to protect international peace and security, which the president views as an urgent necessity given the deteriorating humanitarian conditions in the Gaza Strip."
Omeich emphasized that "pressuring the Security Council to activate this clause could help to end the ongoing violence and tension, as well as open the door for genuine peace efforts that guarantee the rights of all parties involved."
He added that "achieving peace in Gaza is not merely a political issue but a humanitarian one that concerns the lives of millions of civilians suffering the consequences of the ongoing conflict. Therefore, the president’s call represents an urgent plea for the international community to act swiftly and effectively to save lives and achieve lasting peace."
He concluded, "Ultimately, the situation in Gaza requires a collective commitment from all concerned parties, and there must be genuine political will to achieve peace and alleviate the suffering of civilians. The time to act is now, and this call should serve as a starting point toward a better future for the region." He noted that the Italian-Arab Friendship Association has been working tirelessly for the Palestinian cause since its inception.
